Join us in ushering in the New Year with a festive concert led by our Leader Laureate Terje Tønnesen. We wish to make your entrance into 2024 the most uplifting experience possible.

Prepare to be enchanted as we present Tchaikovsky's captivating 'Serenade for Strings,' a cherished favorite among audiences. This masterpiece for the evening exudes Viennese classical vitality and grace, intertwined with a touch of the grand gestures of romanticism. Tchaikovsky himself declared being 'wildly in love' with this composition, incorporating Russian folk melodies and lively folk dance into this serenade.

But that's not all – the evening begins with musical interpretations of daybreak. Swedish Jan Johansson's 'Visa från Utanmyra,' a meditative blend of folk and jazz, evokes memories of morning light, while Dobrinka Tabakova's 'Dawn' radiates warmth in its colors. Youthful energy and playful inventiveness bubble up as the orchestra performs Britten's breakthrough work, the Frank Bridge Variations, and Caroline Shaw's popular 'Entr’act' in a version for strings.

The concert culminates in Scandinavian folk music with a nostalgic glance into the past. In 'Bachslått,' violinist and composer Gjermund Larsen draws inspiration from Bach's cello suite. The energy reaches its peak as the orchestra delves into 'Shine You No More,' composed by Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen – also known as the first violinist of the Danish String Quartet – a piece that glimmers with the spark of the Renaissance's Dowland.

Important update:

Pekka Kuusisto, who was previously announced as the artistic director for the concert, has unfortunately had to cancel his appearance. Instead, our leader laureate Terje Tønnesen will take on this role. The program remains unchanged.
